Many people have different ideas of what the American Dream is and what it takes to make it a reality. The most common and the most accurate idea of the American Dream is for all to have the opportunity to have a chance at living a nice life. This includes all immigrants and anyone else who seems to lack better opportunities often. The American Dream is the belief that anyone, regardless of race, class, gender, or nationality, can be successful in America (read:rich) if they just work hard enough (Wulick). The American Dream is also influenced by those that have money and are successful. These people are looked up to as a goal when it comes to a better life. It gives hope to others that are considering pursuing the American Dream. It is a continuous support system that helps everyone trying to better their lives. It depends on the circumstances, when it comes to whether or not the American Dream is achievable to everyone. It also depends on the environment that the person pursuing the American Dream is in. The American dream is attainable, it just isnt the American dream one is taught to pursue at an early age(Is the American Dream Attainable). Pursuing the American dream has become more common, which has made it more competitive. Improving one of the main factors of the American Dream, which is education, is more expensive now as well. The American Dream does not mean achieving success quickly or gaining a great amount of money easily. It means that a better life is possible with hard work and dedication. It is attainable with hope and determination. The main and most common obstacles include racism and struggles with the economy and finances. Preconceived notions of the character and work ethic of those trying to pursue the American Dream is an issue. The stereotypical idea that they cannot keep a steady job is an issue as well. Although the Civil War of 1865 has ended and African Americans were given their freedom due to the Union Victory, conflict was still arising. Reconstruction was a major â€Å"milestone† as some would say in our history. Reconstruction gave light to the trials and tribulations that were apart of the south. Pre civil war south was known for their rigorous amount of slaves and their labor, post civil war south was known for their resistance against freed slaves and their soon to be citizenship.
