Children are not born with a natural inclination to share. That is something that parents must teach them as they grow. Greed is naturally instilled in men and because of this men have been fighting and violent even before societies were developed. Men were fghting, stealing, and murdering each other for survival. Rousseau argues with Hobbes. Rousseau describes a hypothetical time when society did not exist and men only acted on their natural instincts which were peaceful and timid. Men would not have any sense of right and wrong because they had not been molded by societys standards yet. Hobbes states that in the state of nature men would be fearful and greedy and because of this it was necessary for societies to exist. Humans need protection from each other because instinctually we are violent and pose a threat to others. Men naturally crave property and self-preservation and in this environment peace is not possible. When men come together to form societies social contracts are necessary to guarantee the protection of rights of each man. Once a social contract is established man gave his rights over to the sovereign. A social contract is an understanding in which multiple individuals come together and give their rights to one man. Once the individuals give their rights over them become one sovereign. The rights and rotection of a single individual is no longer important; only the protection of the sovereign as a whole. This is when men could begin to live their lives without fear. Once order was imparted on the people or a society they would live in harmony with each or be forced to leave. If this occurs that individual would no longer be under the protection of the sovereign. Hobbes believes that there are three principles that cause violence: competition, glory, and difference. If one man sees another with an item that he craves competition will take over and he will take the item using force or other means. Glory drives a man to be superior. Without a firm authority established one will be driven to be the most powerful. Rousseau disagrees with Hobbes and insists that in the state of nature the only factor is survival. In this case I believe that Hobbes is thinking too much from a society stand point and he is also contradicting himselt. Society molds us into competing tor glory. In the state ot nature this would not be the case. Hobbes and Rousseau both agree that in the state of nature reason and inequality do not exist yet and it would not be possible for man to understand that he should be more powerful than another. If inequality does not exist then it ould not be possible for one man to be more powerful then another. In Rousseau’s natural state men are solitary, timid, and greed doesn’t exist because society has not corrupted their innocence yet. Rousseau believes that human nature is inherently good and it wasn’t until societies began to establish that human’s instincts became corrupted. When man is in its natural state they are solitary and have no sense of ownership over anything. They struggle with their environment and their natural conditions. Individuals are looking out for themselves and self- preservation is guiding them, Just as in Hobbes natural state, however Rousseau says here is no violence between them. Rousseau compares man to animals by saying man needs to satisfy their physical needs for survival, however we have a natural repugnance for seeing others in pain. Because of this we would never harm another person for our own selfish desires. Language does not exist yet because people are solitary and keep to themselves. Because of this reason does not exist. Without reason there is no Jealously, inequality, or other negative emotions that lead to violence. This seems too optimistic to be accurate. Compassion would exist to an extent but self-preservation will always be more of a priority. If a man has to cause pain to another because there are limited resources then so be it. For example, let’s say it was winter and a man found a small cave. There was already someone else in there and it was only big enough to fit one. Rousseau believes that since men have no sense of ownership, and are solitary creatures that one would simply leave because they don’t have to reasoning to think, â€Å"l was here first, so it is mine. † Hobbes would say that men are violent and greedy and in this situation violence would occur. Men are born with a natural instinct to survive and because of this both men would fght over shelter. Humans would not do harm Just to be â€Å"evil† because good and evil would not exist yet. Once families started to form humans had more time to do other activities and with this came reason and inequality. Rousseau gives the example of a dance around a fire. One man will look at another and see that this man is bigger than another and reason would lead him to believe that one must be better than the other. Once inequality is established man has a need to be more powerful then another. Another factor that leads to inequality is the ownership of land. Rousseau states, â€Å"The first man who, having fenced in a piece of land, said â€Å"This is mine,† and ound people naive enough to believe him, that man was the true founder of civil society. From how many crimes, wars, and murders, from how many horrors and misfortunes might not any one have saved mankind, by pulling up the stakes, or filling up the ditch, and crying to his fellows: Beware of listening to this impostor; you are undone if you once forget that the fruits of the earth belong to us all, and the earth itself to nobody. † Once man owns land and inequality has set in men will become greedy and want more believing that owning land is a symbol of power. Man ill begin to want more wealth and glory and this is when violence starts. The natural instincts of being solitary and peaceful have been corrupted by the society and humans have now been molded into greedy power hungry people. Rousseau states, â€Å"l must make everyone see that bonds ot servitude are tormed trom the mutual dependence of men. It is impossible to slave a man without first putting him in the positions of being unable to do without another person. Rousseau believes that when men live alone they cannot be corrupted because they rely on no one but themselves for survival. Once men come together and form families and societies they become enslaved by dependence into that society. After looking at both ideas I believe that Hobbes is not most accurate in his thinking. Rousseau has an optimistic, humanist way of looking at men, but I believe that it doesn’t matter how far back in history one goes, men were always violent, greedy, fearful creatures. Just because reason didn’t exist does not mean that men wouldn’t have a wanting for resources that weren’t theirs. Men may not have been able to reason why they wanted something, but the greed was still there. Society and social contracts did not cause or mold our greediness, and violence like Rousseau believes. Those instincts were instilled in men from the beginning as a way of survival. It is impossible to have any absolute truth over who is right in this argument. Once man has been civilized the effects cannot be reversed. We would never be able to go back to the state of nature and this is why the debate is still continuing today. The basis for these Principles and recommendations is based on the if not, why not approach[2]. It implies that if the board of directors of the listed entity that a recommendation made by the Council is not appropriate and it does not adopt it, it is required to provide an appropriate explanation for not adopting such recommendation that is, if not, why not approach. According to Principle 7 of the Corporate Governance, a listed entity is required to establish a risk management framework to identify the risks associated with the business activities carried out by the organization and to mitigate suc h risks immediately, thus, ensuring the business activities are carried out diligently and appropriately[3]. In the given scenario, the first issue that arises is to determine whether Ardent Leisure recognized and managed the risk that arose from the Dreamworld incident[4]. As mentioned above that principle 7 of the corporate governance recommendations made by the ASX, a corporation is required to identify the risks and mitigate such risks to ensure a good corporate governance practice. In case the Board of listed entitles is unable to recognize the risks and resolve the same, the participants of the company, that is, the shareholders, employees, consumer and the society shall suffer loss and such failure shall also affect the reputation and goodwill of the company as well. The ASX has recommended that the listed entities should establish one committee that would be responsible for recognizing the risks and mitigate it before it affects the participants of the company and the company altogether. The members of such committee shall include minimum three directors who shall be entitled to carry out their business activities independently without any interference[5]. The recommendations made by ASX with respect to the risk management strategies, also requires the company to review the activities of the risk management committee for ensuring the efficacy of the committee[6]. The board of the listed entities must ensure that the role and structure of the internal audit functions must be disclosed. The company must disclose environmental, social and economical risks and the structure that is adopted by the company for the dealing with such risks. In the given scenario, the company Ardent leisure has suffered losses due to the accident that took place in DremaWorld, which claimed lives of many patrons. The accident took place due to a technical failure in the rides of the Dream world Leisure Park. It is the responsible of an organization, especially, those which deals with leisure parks to arrange effective safety measures that deal with the any accidents that takes place[7]. However, it is apparent from the case scenario that the company Ardent leisure did not establish any the risk management committee that would recognize risks and mitigate them. Consequently, the company failed to deal with the post accident circumstances and had been subjected to severe criticism. If the common law principles are applied, the occupier of the premises shall be liable for any harm that takes place within the premises. Similarly, it can be said that Ardent shall be liable for the accident that occurred in the Dream world Park and in the absence of an appropriate risk management framework; the company failed to the deal with the post accident circumstances and mitigate the risks effectively[8]. If the company had risk management framework to recognize and mitigate the risks, it would have been able to address the risks in a more appropriate manner. Therefore, it is evident that the directors of the Ardent leisure failed to recognize the risk and mitigate them. The second issue requires determining whether the company had infringed principle 7 of the corporate governance and whether ASX is entitled to take disciplinary action against the directors for failing to recognize and manage the risk. Principle 7 of the corporate governance requires the listed entities to recognize the risks associated with the business activities carried out by the organization and mitigate such risks[9]. The company could have established a crisis management team for the purpose of initiating effective measures after the occurrence of the accident in the Dream world theme park. The principal 7 also required the company to disclose social, environment and economical risks but the company failed to comply with this provision, which questioned the accountability of the company. If the company had made such disclosures, it could have enabled the company to mitigate the risks and effectively deal with the post accident circumstances in the Dream World theme park. Hence, it is established that the company had failed to comply with the provisions stipulated by the ASX with respect to the corporate governance[10]. The consequences suffered by the company includes the decline in the high level competitiveness and portrayed the poor performance of the company due to the infringement of the company of the provisions relating to risk management stipulated by the Principal 7 of the Corporate governance recommended by ASX[11]. The failure of the company to establish a risk management framework within the corporation, have led the company to suffer financial loss as well as reputational loss due to the accident that took place in the Dream World and this conduct of the company denotes that the company had failed to act in the best interest of the company. The absence of a risks management framework criticizes the accountability of the boards and discourages the investors to invest in the company. The ASX is authorized to initiate enforcement actions. The ASX has recommended the if not, why not approach that should be practiced by the listed entities as it would enable the organization to give proper reasons for not adopting any recommendation made by the ASX[12]. As per the assets appeals and enforcement rule book, any corporation that violates the stipulated provisions of the Austra Care regulations and the operating rules that is applicable to all the corporations shall be subjected to a penalty of $250000 and a penalty of $100000 for committing a breach. Hence, in the given circumstances, Ardent leisure Pty Ltd is entitled to the civil penalties and the directors are entitled to be disqualified. The third issue arising out of the Dream world incident is relating to the breach of directorial duties under section 180 of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) and whether the harm suffered by the company is sufficient. According to section 180 of the CA 2001 (Cth), a director of an organization is obligated to discharge its duties with due care and diligence and ensure that the acts or omissions of the directors must be in the best interests of the company. The level of care and diligence to be exercised by the directors of a company must be such that any prudent person in the position of the director shall exercise same level of care and diligence while performing its obligations. In case of an infringement of section 180 of the Corporation Act 2001 (Cth), the directors shall be imposed with civil penalties under section 1317 of the Act. The directors must make decisions in good faith and for a proper purpose[13]. In Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) v Cassimatis (No. 8) [2016] FCA 1023, and in ASIC v Mariner Corp (2015) 327 ALR 95 at [444], the court held that the company has committed a violation of section 180 of the CA 2001 as their actions were inconsistent and not in the best interest of the company. No reasonable person would have acted in the same manner under similar circumstances. According to the principles of corporate governance and recommendation made by the ASX, the board of listed entities is required to the act with due care and diligence while performing their obligations. However, Ardent failed to comply with the provision, as it did not exercise due care and diligence post the Dream World accident. Further, any reasonable person in the same position would not have acted in the same manner; hence, the directors are liable to civil penalties under section 1317 apart from the financial and reputational loss suffered by the company. The fourth issue arising out of the given scenario is to determine whether the company conducted a review and attempted to improve the effectiveness of the risk management framework of the company. After the Dream World incident, several reports have revealed that since the goal of the company was to become a global leader in the field of Entertainment, it had focused in the procedures that would enable the company to achieve that goal. As a result, the company had failed to focus of the corporate governance principles that required the company to ensure that apart from the realization of individual goals, it must strive to fulfill the social, economic and the goals of the participants of the company. The company failed to comply with the principles and recommendations made by the ASX with respect to the establishment of risks management committee to recognize the risks and mitigate the risks. In the absence of a risk management framework, the company failed to deal with the post accident circumstances[14]. Although the company provided condolences to the family of the deceased the and expressed its disappointment, it persisted to give explanations about how the age old policies of the company have served it right since its inception and have led the company to become one of the leading companies in the field of global entertainment. After the incident in the Dream World, the shares of the Ardent Leisure had fallen steeply, the company had suffered financial loss of 49.4 million, and the ride that led to the accident was stopped. The Dream World park was closed for 45 days and the company also confessed that it had failed to implement effective safety measures owing to the absence of a risks management framework within the corporation. The company confessed that it failed to take reasonable steps within 48 hours after the incident had taken place[15]. Due to severe criticisms with respect to the failure of the company to initiate reasonable steps for ensuring the safety of the patrons, the CEO of the company resigned and the company continues to give explanations why they have failed to initiate reasonable steps. However, the company has initiated review processes for ensuring safety regarding the operation of the rides. The ride that caused the accident was permanently closed and the company has been engaged in developing policies in association with the private sector and is establishing a crisis management committee[16]. The question is how long ago, and why did the dog become our aids, tools, and companions? Answering this question means dealing with the four fields of Anthropology: Ethnologically, Archaeologically, Physically, and Linguistically. The most obvious way to learn about the past of the dog species, is to treat it the same way we treat ancient societies. Archaeologists study where they once were, look at their remains. Where they lived, what they looked like, and how they changed over time. An example of using the Archaeological field of Anthropology would be the excavation of the Roman city, Pompeii, which was destroyed by the volcano Vesuvius in AD 79. When finally excavated, searchers found the remains of a dog lying across a child, apparently trying to protect him. By looking at this individual skeleton, we can estimate that just 1900 years ago, the inhabitants knew of the dogs desire to protect. They probably counted on dogs similarly to the way we do today. Other archaeological digs have suggested that the relationship between dogs and humans dates to about 14,000 years ago. Most experts do agree the dog was the first domesticated animal, was domesticated around 14 to 15,000 years ago. The earliest bones of d ogs that we have recovered come from a site called ein Mallaha in Israel. This site was discovered in 1979 and the bones date back to 12,000 years old but historians believe the dog had been domesticated even a few thousand years before that. Another field of Anthropology is the Ethnological aspect of the science. From looking back at the ancient civilizations customs and beliefs, we can see relationships between their stories and how they lived. This also ties into the linguistic field of Anthropology, where the culture is passed on to the children through stories and myths. An example of this would be the following: historians have studied the Roman myths and legends that were popular in ancient Rome, and they agree that the Ancient Romans relied heavily on watchdogs for protection. The Romans apparently derived this tradition from the legend that a dog guarded the gate to hell. Therefore, they used dogs to protect what was dear to them, homes, valuables, and families. Romans also used dogs for military purposes, some as attack dogs, and some as messengers. They equipped their Mastiffs with light armor and sent them into battle against the enemy, carrying spikes and cauldrons of flaming sulphur (Whitehead 242). These do gs were obviously essential to the ancient Romans lives. The last field of Anthropology that has not been discussed is the physical field. By looking at a culmination of the fossils we have, it not only adds to a holistic approach to the problem, but it also gives us a longitudinal study of a very old question. Instead of gathering the information over multiple visits, which would be impossible, we can get the same information we need by looking at the same object, at different points of history. To do this, we look at fossilized remains that we are able to date. By doing this, we can track the changes we notice. For example, it is quite obvious; that the first domesticated dogs were not as diverse as the dogs we have today. There were only a few kinds of dogs. Fossil remains of the early Bronze Age, 6500 years ago; make it possible to identify 5 major groups of early dogs. As the fossils get younger and younger, we notice a growing of the species. Dogs are obviously mixing and creating new breeds. The wide diversity in breeds that we witn ess today comes from selective breeding as well as natural genetic mutations in the five groups. As of hot weather, the demand for water alone rises. This leads to rises water-cement ratio, and hence further leading to low potential strength. Also to be noted that higher temperatures gives rise to higher slump loss. Concrete cured at higher temperatures when compared with the concrete cured at ambient temperature, would not be as strong at the end of 28 days. It should be kept in mind that high temperatures, high velocity and low humidity can affect the quality of fresh concrete. The high rate of evaporation introduces early plastic shrinkage or drying shrinkage. Also the evaporation can remove the surface water which is necessary for hydration of the concrete unless proper curing methods are used. Rapid drops in the temperature introduce thermal cracks in the concrete structure. These occur when there are hot days followed by cool nights. High temperatures are largely responsible for cracking in massive concrete structures. Statement of purpose The main purpose for this report is to throw light on the problems arising during concreting in hot weather. And also to enumerate various methods via which the problems can be avoided to yield good throughput and quality for the concrete developed. Concreting in hot weather can produce adverse effects on the quality of concrete and structure of building for which it is to be used. So it is important to take into consideration hot weather when planning concrete projects. As the temperature of the freshly mixed concrete reaches 25 °C which is approximately 77  °F, it has adverse effects on the quality of concrete. Also to be kept in mind, that temperature above 32 °C i.e. 90 °F with lack of protected environment for concrete finishing and placement could lead to difficulty in producing quality concrete required. Among other problems, hot weather conditions can lead to rapid rate of evaporation. Alhozaimy Figure Nomograph The successful hot weather concretion can be done by assessing the factors which affect the quality and stability of concrete and then planning to minimize their affects. Hydration of concrete can be seen as an exothermic reaction, which means it generates heat and also the reaction rate is faster when the concrete is hot. The main concern we identify here is not the air temperature but the concrete temperature. When concrete settles, it sucks up water, which causes crystallization of particles around the aggregate particles. When the concrete is hot, the reaction rate is faster and hence crystals are formed rapidly, but they dont have time to grow strong. Initial strength might be high but the strength seen after 28 days suffers highly. It is seen that if the concretes temperature is higher by about 18 °C the compressive strength decreases by 10%.The other problem which arises while concreting during hot weathers is surface drying. There occurs more and more drying and surface lin kage if we have hot concrete, sun shining very hot and hot dry winds blowing. Also we should take into consideration the plastic shrinkage cracking caused in the hot weather. If outside temperature is very high i.e. the concrete is colder than the atmospheric temperature, the chances are that the water will be condensing on the surface rather than the surface drying out. There arises a major problem when the air is cooler than concrete. Contractors mainly aim to go for cooler concrete in hot weather. In this case too, hot weather can cause plastic shrinkage cracking, this case occurs then the concrete temperature is high and the humidity is low. In order to know,whether evaporation could pose a problem or not we use nomograph. By knowing air temperature, concrete temperature, wind velocity and relative humidity, we arrive at the rate of evaporation. Accordingly, if the rate is greater than 0.1 pounds per square foot per hour, shrinkage cracking is possible. Hot dry sub grades and frameworks may also lead to cracks by absorbing water from the mix. Heat and concrete are also challenged by thermal differentials. This means that one part of the concrete is warmer while the other part is colder. It is observed that if the differential is greater than somewhere around 20 °F, then cracks are likely to be formed. Effects on the characteristics of the concrete formed Setting time The setting time of the concrete decreases with the increase in the concrete temperature. This in turn gives us very less time to place compact and finish the concrete. Workability and slump Higher temperatures of the concrete reduce the workability of the concrete more rapidly with time. Addition of water to improve workability of the mixture decreases the strength and increases the permeability of the concrete. Compressive Strength High concrete temperature and high water requirement can lead to lower 28 day strength. In case more water is added so as to maintain workability, it leads us to higher water-cement ratio which results in loss of strength and durability. This increases the drying shrinkage of the hardened concrete. In the opposite case, if the water is not added the reduced setting time and lower workability increase the potential inappropriate compaction, this results in formation of cold joints and poor finishing. During hot weather conditions, temperature rise in the concrete may happen due to heat of hydration. The development of thermal gradients may lead to thermal cracking in the concrete slab. Although at higher concrete temperature, the early strength is higher, its long term affects a low strength of the concrete, where as the concrete cured at lower temperature has higher strength. Its can be seen in the laboratory tests that the increased exposure to higher temperature directly affects the strength of the concrete after it has hardened. Poor surface appearance Increased rate of evaporation leads to drying and stiffening of the surface. Among the cases of flatwork, this can lead to premature finishing of the surface, trapping some amount of water within the mix. The compacter layer (from finishing) causes rise in the water to be trapped below the surface and hence deboning of the surface. There may occur colour differences on the surface due to different rates of hydration and cooling. As discussed widely above, hot weather accelerates evaporation and loss in moisture from the surface. Plastic Shrinkage cracking occurs when the shrinkage stress exceeds tensile strength of the concrete. Plastic Shrinkage cracks formed may be quite deep because concrete has little capacity to resist shrinkage stress. Also the cracks continue to widen and form more and more cracks until the stress is relieved. It is also to be noted that a few times the Plastic Shrinkage Cracks reach to the free edges where unrestrained stress can occur. Concrete is exposed to thermal cracking when the concrete is initially placed and the interior of the concrete is exposed to heat rising from the settlement of the concrete and the heat of hydration. Rapid changes in the temperature on the surface of the concrete such as hot days followed by cool night leads to formation of temperature gradient. The warmer interior restrains the colder exterior, which wants to contract. If the differential of the temperature is large then thermal cracking may occur. The insulating effect is more in massive thick concrete, and hence they are more at risk towards the thermal cracking effect. Precautions should be taken to reduce the effects from high temperature against concreting. Use of water reducing, set retarding mixtures can help cutting the effects of high temperature concreting. In the cases where extreme heat conditions are unavoidable, chilled water or ice can be used as part of mixing water. Other methods such as sprinkling and shading the aggregate before mixing can also help lower the temperature of the concrete. Condition where theres low humidity and high winds, windbreaks and sunscreens or mist fogging can be used to avoid plastic shrinkage cracks in the slabs. Many of the following suggestions can be used depending on the atmospheric conditions and requirement type of the concrete to be formed: Concrete mixture designs can include set retarders, water reducers in order to gain lowest cement factor. Modification in the mixtures as appropriate i.e. changes in the composition percentages of retarders, moderate heat hydration cements, and Pozzolanic mixtures can be done to shield against hot weather concretion. Enough manpower can be employed so that as soon as the concrete is delivered, it is quickly placed, finished and cured. Mixing water and cool aggregates can be added to concrete mixture to reduce its initial temperature. Using a concrete consistency can allow rapid placement and consolidation. Sometimes in extreme conditions, we can adjust the time of concrete placement to take advantage of the time of the day when it is cooler i.e. early morning or night placement. Fogging the area above the concrete placement so as to raise the level of relative humidity can help satisfy the demand for moisture from the air. Rate of evaporation can be monitored using a nemograph which charts temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity. Covering of the placed slabs should be done with the damp sand beds rather than polythene sheets if barrier is required. When forms are removed, curing should be done to the newly exposed surfaces of the concrete. It should be noted that aliphatic alcohols are not a substitute for curing compounds and it is advised to not to used them. Aliphatic alcohols are used for initial screeding and finishing operations. Although aliphatic alcohols are compatible with most of the curing compounds, it is a good practise to check their compatibility in case the two products are purchased from different manufacturers. Another cut down can be done at the addition of water while at job site. Addition of water should only be done at the arrival only to adjust the slump. Later additions should be avoided. In no circumstances should the addition of water exceed 2 or 2.5 gallons per cubic yard. Water should never be added to concrete which is older than 1.5 hours. Finishing should be done as soon as the sheen has left the surface, this should be followed by immediate curing. Curing should be continued for 3 days and covering should be done to prevent evaporation or a liquid curing compound should be used. A very useful idea is to add white pigment to the covering liquid curing compound so that it reflects the heat away from the concrete surface. Moistening of sub grades, forms and reinforcement before it is placed. However it should be noted that standing water in such cases should be avoided. Field test cylinder should be protected by shading and preventing evaporation. Field curing boxes with ice may be used to maintain temperature of 60 °F -80 °F for the cylinders. Minimizing the effects of hot weather conditions Controlling the concrete temperature From Concrete Journal (2001) Properties of Hot Weather Concrete and Countermeasures at Practice. AS 1379 states requirement that temperature of the concrete at the time of delivery should be from 5 to 35 °C. In cases of higher ambient temperature, the supplier needs to take precautions to ensure that the concrete temperature is delivered is within the allowable range. There are a number of methods available to control the temperature of the concrete. This includes adjusting the temperature of the ingredients of the concrete mixture. It should be taken into consideration that since the aggregates constitute the bulk of the concrete and have the highest heat capacity, the effect the temperature of the freshly mixed concrete greatly. But the temperature of the aggregates is the most difficult task to control. The temperature of the cement doesnt affect much in this case as it has low specific heat and relatively small amount in the mixture. Liquid nitrogen can be injected into the concrete while mixing to lower the temperature. The latent thermal energy of the gas cools the mixtu re drastically. Although this process is economical only on major projects involving vast amounts of concrete for construction. In this essay I am going to look at two newspapers, one tabloid and one broadsheet, and analyse the different techniques used by them to select, construct and present news to their readers. I will do this by examining their news values, news sources and use of effective layout. I will also look at their use of key concepts in the production of news articles. I plan to look at The Sun and The Times. The definition of a tabloid is: In summary form; condensed. Lurid or sensational. This does accurately sum up what a tabloid is. A tabloid newspaper is a newspaper of small format giving the news in condensed form, usually with illustrated, often sensational material. The language used in The Sun is mainly mono syllabic language using simple language and a large proportion of the space is taken up by mastheads and pictures. This means the stories in tabloids are not only easier to read but also shorter. The language is very sensationalised in tabloids also, this is because they want to sell more papers and making stories more dramatic can do this. The amount of hard news that a paper decides to print is determined by the editorial policy of the paper. Tabloids do feature political stories, though they tend to prefer to focus on personalities of the politicians rather than the actual issues that may be relevant. The language used in broadsheets is very different. The language is mostly poly syllabic and much more subjective. They use more complex language and a large proportion of the space is taken up by text, broadsheets have less pictures and generally smaller mastheads. There is likely to be a much closer correlation between the news in the broadsheets and the TV news. In most cases the lead story will be the same. The order of importance in which the news has been ranked is also likely to be similar in the case of TV news and the broadsheets. Rupert Murdoch owns both the newspapers I have chosen to look at. The editor of The Sun is Rebecca Wade and the editor of The Times is Robert Thompson. Broadsheets are aimed mainly at class A, B and C1s. This is because they often have a higher interest in the issues of politics and finance. They are less likely to want to read gossip and news based around celebrities. Tabloid readers are, however, more of working class, categories C2, D and E and are usually less educated therefore would rather have a gossip page to read that is less challenging and demanding. However often newspapers will runt he same story on the front page. Newspapers have to tailor the story to its target audience. They will adjust the angles at which they look at it. A newspapers sources are also quite important in the way that they effect the way a story is written. Whereas broadsheets sources will be mainly manipulative, a tabloid will have more pluralist news sources. The way in which minority groups are represented in newspapers is very different. A specific example of this is the representation of Muslims since the incident on September 11th. The Sun actually wrote a story trying to stop prejudice toward Muslims in this country and tried to take a differing view to other pares. The Times has a similar view to all the other broadsheets, a very conservative view. Many of these newspapers are printing a bad representation of minority groups. This is more evidential in broadsheets because the people who read them hold more power. By putting across a bad representation of minority groups to these people they are effecting the way these groups are treated. The Times is a conservative paper with quite right wing views. The Sun, however, is now labour although it has been known to change its political standing and has become known as the paper that wins election. It helped Margaret Thatcher to win the conservative election in the 1970s and then in 1997 changed to labour and helped Tony Blair to come into power.
